Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a modality that has been well-established in the
field of medical diagnosis (diagnostic ultrasound,
echocardiography, etc.). Recent research has shown,
however, that ultrasound has tremendous potential as a
means of therapeutic intervention, as well. In various
experimental studies, it has been shown to have effects on
hemostasis, wound healing, and drug delivery.
Though it is poorly evaluated to date, there is a small amount of
data that suggests that ultrasound may also have the effect of
localizing systemically-delivered medications to target tissues
of interest. Experiments to better understand the fundamentals
of this potential application are currently underway in our
laboratory.
Through our collaborations with researchers in the department
of Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, we
are optimistic that our combined clinical perspective and
research expertise will lead to new and improved ways to utilize
ultrasound in the treatment of a myriad of disease states.
